Goodnight, Sweet Prince

It is with great sadness that the news about the passing away of HRH Prince Philip, the Royal Consort, was received by the members of the British Tamils Forum. This is sadly an end of an era within the Windsors.

Born into a royal family of Greece, in the island of Corfu, with his Adonis like looks, it was not surprising that he was able to capture the heart and mind of the young Princess Elizabeth, the then heir to the British throne. Being the nephew of Lord Mountbatten of Burma, a grandson of Queen Victoria, this young Greek Prince easily won the seal of approval of George the VI, the emperor of the then vast British Empire, the doting father of the young princess, who was to succeed him later in the year 1952.

Being the Royal Consort, also holding the title of Duke of Edinburgh, would have been a whole new experience to this dashing addition to the British Royal household, given his natural effervescence. Nevertheless, he fulfilled his role with extreme grace standing by our beloved Queen Elizabeth Regina the second, for almost sixty two years, as the Royal Consort.

Always dressed impeccably, mostly in the full regalia of the naval uniform, a service to which he belonged when he met his partner for life, our beloved Prince Philip stood by the British throne with an unwavering loyalty and above all with a well perceived devotion to our gracious Queen, his beloved wife.

A Deeply family oriented Royal Patriarch, a loving father and a doting grand and great grandfather, his contribution to the stability of the British household cannot be encapsulated in a few words. A towering figure indeed.

Prince Philip will be fondly remembered for his stewardship of the World Wildlife Fund, Duke of Edinburg award scheme for school children, his common touch and the spontaneous sense of humour. His absence will hardly go unnoticed for years to come.

May we be permitted to join the peoples of all four nations of the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth in expressing our heartfelt condolences to the bereaving Queen and the other Royals. Our thoughts are with them at this hour of deep sorrow.

May his soul rest in peace.

Goodnight, Sweet Prince.
